Warsaw’s Christmas lights

The Christmas lights in town this year are probably the best I’ve seen yet. I’m trying to recollect what they were like 15 years ago but if I have any memory it is that there were none. Am I mistaken?

We walked at the weekend from New Town Square through Old Town and along Krak Przed until we got to Hoover Square. Without question, the stretch from Christmas Tree outside the Royal Castle up to and including Hoover Square is the most impressive. The Old Town and New Town squares are a poor effort by comparison.

The old town has the same horrid blue flashing octopus it had last year around the central water feature, a few lights hanging from the walls and a new fangled projection of snow flakes onto one entire side. The same projection is used on the castle. New Town Square has a tree with a talking bear inside, nothing worth going to look at but might be a good bet if you’re with young kids.

We were hoping for a “Christmas Market” in the town square but there’s nothing to see yet. There was an attempt at one along Krak Przed but as seems to be the way with all these things recently the stalls actually selling something interesting, handicrafts or whatever, have been replaced by ones selling foodstuffs either to take home or to eat there. We visited a similar market over by Solec as well at the weekend and that has suffered the same fate. We don’t have a problem with the food stalls per se but they should be maximum of about 25-30% of the market, recently this percentage is more like 60-70%, which makes it hardly worth going unless you’re hungry.

Anyway, reasons to be happy #1 – this year’s tree appears to have been purchased without the sponsorship of Ferrero Rocher!

Here are a few iPhone snaps I took along the way:
