First thing we did today was Pisa. Can’t say we were impressed. Lucca is a place we might go back to but not Pisa. The immediate area around the tower was nice but the rest of the place, via a walk and a bus tour, didn’t convince us to hang around so we headed for San Gimignano.
A relatively short drive got us here by about three o’clock despite the dawdling Italians. We unpacked and were straight in the pool to cool down. By seven we were in San Gimignano itself to meet and eat with friends from Warsaw who have been holidaying in Umbria.
San Gimignano seems like a great town so we’ll for sure be back there especially as it is only 2.5km from where we are staying, so more later on that.
The meal was a revelation, at a restaurant recommended by our host. The best food of the holiday by far and at €156 for four adults and two kids with plenty of wine and other drinks, one of the cheapest. I had a mixed bruschetta to start followed by wild boar, a local speciality. Both, along with the side dishes of artichoke with sage, roast potatoes and aubergine and a mixed salad, were excellent. Our friends shared the biggest steak I’ve ever seen, 1kg apparently. I think we might be trying the other three recommended restaurants before we leave!
So far, this place is everything a holiday should be. We might just have saved the best for last.
Tomorrow is a lazy day by the hotel and pool with our friends who leave tomorrow night. Fulvio our host will be cooking dinner and he gives cooking lessons (and likes his wine) so should be good.
