After a short while I realised that it didn’t matter who won because they’re going to get stuffed by the Russians, so then I started to relax and enjoy the diving competition.

Diving gold medal goes, without question, to David Villa of Spain who generally spent most of his time on the ground or getting his feet mixed up so he could miss a sitter. His pièce de résistance though, was his penalty area dive when nobody was even close to him. He got a yellow card from the ref and a lot of abuse from yours truly.

It was a game of two tactics – the Italians sent in high cross after high cross in the forlorn hope that Toni would start playing football and head the ball in the general direction of the net. He didn’t, they never looked like scoring any other way either. The Spanish, being rather munchkin-like compared to the Italians, decided that air power was not their strong point and so their only tactic was rocket propelled shots from 50 yards. That didn’t work either.

Italy were missing Pirlo badly. I suppose he was out because of the stupid yellow card rule. He’s the only Italian in my Fantasy League teams and was a waste of a player today. Spain looked better when Fabregas came on. Torres was not effective, he seems like a player who if the ball doesn’t land exactly how he wants it, nothing comes of it. Reminds me a bit of Michael Owen.

Nobody was chasing anything. After the Russia game, this looked like slow-motion football!

The only good point of the game is that Iker Casillas, the Spanish goalie, got one of my Fantasy Euro teams ten points for two penalty saves. Trouble is that it isn’t the team that’s in the lead in the Super League, so not all that exciting really!

So, Russia in the final then, to play…………Germany, Turkey??

  1. I left at half time to go for a walk. Much more exciting. Came back in time for the last minutes of the penalty shoot out.

Turkey were my underdog favourite, and I’ll stick with them. With Russia.

  2. For some reason this game didn’t have any appeal for me from the start, so I went to bed early. Sounds like a didn’t miss much.

It’s not these teams that I’m worried about…
